STARS Children of an Incarcerated Parent
This program specially matches children of prisoners with volunteers.
Did You Know? 1 in 33 American children have a parent who is incarcerated.
1 in 10 American children have a parent under penal supervision.
2.3 million children are affected by the 1.1 million parents incarcerated in prisons or jails. The STARS program hopes to bring support to these children and families through providing the children with a quality mentor and also supporting the families with additional community resources.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor to a child of a prisoner, please contact Summer Masuda at (602) 393-4139 or smasuda@bbbsaz.org. If you have specific questions related to the STARS program, please contact Andrea Scott at (602) 393-2903 or ascott@bbbsaz.org. Frequently Asked Questions How long will it take me to complete the enrollment process? The time varies for each volunteer. On average it will take about six to eight weeks. If you wish to volunteer in West Phoenix or South Phoenix (where we have more children waiting), your enrollment time may be shorter. Big Sisters wishing to match in the Scottsdale, North Phoenix or Tempe areas will have a longer enrollment time than eight weeks. This is due to the limited number of girls that enroll in our program in those areas.
What is the family situation of the children in the Community Based Program? The boys are primarily from single-parent homes, living with their moms or a female caretaker. The girls come from a variety of homes, some single and some dual-parent homes.
Where is my volunteer time most needed in Maricopa County and in Northern Gila County? Our longest wait list for Phoenix children in the program is in South Phoenix and the West Valley (Surprise, Glendale, Laveen, Avondale, Goodyear etc.). In Northern Gila County we have children in all areas.
