PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 6, 2009) - Big Brother and Valley resident, Paul Huffstead, has been awarded Arizona's Big Brother of the Year and is in the running to become Big Brother of the Year nationally. Huffstead has served as a Big Brother to his 13-year-old Little Brother Paul, since November 2004. He was also a Big Brother in Las Vegas prior to moving to Phoenix.
"I became a Big Brother for two reasons. One, because I got to a point in my life when I realized it wasn't all about me, and I wanted to help someone move forward in a positive direction," said Huffstead. "Second, I know there are families trying to break negative cycles. Unless something positive happens within that cycle, the behavior will continue."
Huffstead is matched to his Little Brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona's STARS Children of Incarcerated Parents program. The program is the primary provider of mentoring services in Maricopa, Gila and Pinal counties focused specifically on helping children of prisoners break the cycle of incarceration.
Even though Huffstead spends extended periods of time away from the Valley as a pilot for US Airways, he still makes time in his busy schedule to mentor his Little Brother Paul. He was also honored as the 2008 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona Community-based Big Brother of the Year and was awarded the 2009 Governor's Mentoring Award for the state of Arizona.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will hold their National Conference June 16 - 18 in Miami, Fla. where the National Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year will be announced.
